Description
When I am trying to get the romantic attention of another person, there is constant self-evaluation taking place. There is hyper-awareness of the details about and surrounding the object of my desire. Understanding my place among those details becomes all-consuming. I watch for patterns and look for clues about my relationship to that person, like a calculator working out values. I find myself constructing infatuated word problems: If I am sitting with person K, and X does not take the empty seat on my other side, then X is 1/2 less likely to notice that I am wearing beautiful perfume for X’s benefit. How can I regain that lost 1/2 of a chance? “X” is unaware that all this thought and energy is being invested is in them. Unwittingly, they continually change the variables of my word problems, thus I must change the problems and the conclusions.
